In the annals of history, there are events that stand out for their brutality and inhumanity. One such dark moment occurred during the Holi celebrations of 1757 in Mathura and Vrindavan when Ahmed Shah Abdali unleashed a massacre on the Hindu population assembled to celebrate the festival of colors.

The Tragic Events of 28th February 1757

As the vibrant festivities of Holi brought joy and merriment to the hearts of Hindus, the peace was shattered by the arrival of Ahmed Shah Abdali and his ruthless forces. Thousands of locals and pilgrims were targeted, regardless of age or gender. The once joyous atmosphere turned into a scene of horror and devastation as innocent lives were lost.

The Brave Resistance of Jat Prince Jawahar Singh

In the face of this brutal onslaught, Jat Prince Jawahar Singh valiantly led a force of 5000 men to offer resistance against Abdali’s forces outside Mathura. Despite their courage and determination, they were outnumbered and outmatched. The battle raged on for 9 hours, resulting in the tragic sacrifice of 3000 of Jawahar Singh’s soldiers who attained Veergati for their bravery.

The Defiance of Naga Sadhus in Gokul

As Abdali’s forces marched towards Gokul, the sacred land where Lord Krishna spent his childhood, they encountered fierce opposition from the Naga Sadhus protecting the temples and the people. In a bloody confrontation, the Naga Sadhus stood their ground and emerged victorious, inflicting heavy losses on Abdali’s forces. Over 2000 Naga Sadhus attained Veergati in defense of their faith and heritage.

This Holi, let us pay tribute to our warrior ancestors who laid down their lives for Dharma and the motherland, as well as the innocent victims of the gen0cide that took place during those fateful days in Mathura and Vrindavan.
